Since last speaking at a candidate Q&A sponsored by Citizens First in 2004, I have continued my volunteering, and speaking out on Town issues. What were your questions back then? You asked what we candidates would do about the Town’s decreasing revenues. How could fiscal health be restored. Identify and offer solutions to the major problems which Downtown was experiencing. You asked us about how to make the Administration open, transparent, and accountable to its citizens. Lastly, what was our general vision of how to grow Blacksburg.

Well, thanks to a Virginia Supreme Court which decided a $25,000 proffer wasn’t enough to be a “vested interest”, the Administration, BURG, and Citizens First dealt a staggering blow to an estimated $1 Million in tax revenue annually, continued the struggle of students and workforce people for everyday supplies, opportunities for decent part time and full time jobs, and seriously wounded their chances for good clean recreational activities.

Since 2004, only Mass Transit has been advanced! In those five years, Blacksburg Transit has moved up to 2.8Million passengers in 2008, and is running 28% HIGHER in this new academic year. BT will shortly open significant operations in Christiansburg. And, after almost not making it, the SmartWay bus to and from Roanoke is now on firm footing.

In 2009, Downtown still sputters along with feeble measures. From N.Main & Progress to S.Main & Eheart, Downtown Blacksburg still struggles with a constricted aorta. The Administration & VDOT bowled over opposition to a controversial traffic circle, then compounded the issue by mismatching its junction at N.Main & College. So called Downtown traffic and mobility still suffers from its problems of festival and rally closures, insufferable traffic and dangerous pedestrian/bicycle situations. The Old BMS gets more feeble by the day. When will Council and Board of Supervisors DEMAND the School Board declare it surplus so planners and developers can start work on revitalizing this property? Significant buildings and properties continue to rot and drag down the vitality and appearance of Downtown.

Openness, transparency, and accountability are only starting baby steps. Televising all work sessions of Council and Planning Commission would be a great step forward. Reaching out to students and the Town’s work force would add a better balance to Council subcommittees. Do the same for obtaining members of the Comprehensive Plan Panel. Do not permit Council members to cast votes as a member of a sub-committee, for it defeats the purpose of gathering fresh eyes.

Where do you find fresh faces? Have our own “TOWN HALL MEETINGS” where the floor is open for several hours to any topic, so people feel they can reach their elected officials. Broadcast all work meetings except for personnel issues of great sensitivity. Include even legal and contractual issues in the sunshine. It is the height of conceit to assume Town Administration has all the questions and all the answers. You cannot stimulate the electorate by leaving them outside.

My vision for Blacksburg is to be a partner in the education of students with TECH, and to make this town affordable again for those that live here now, those who want to live here, and those who work here. It’s that simple.
