South Main redevelopment

The South Main redevelopment project will breathe new life into that part of town, with clothing stores and movie theatres a welcome addition, in my opinion. With more shopping options in Blacksburg, we will be burning a lot less gas driving to Christiansburg and even Roanoke. Having a good quality men's clothing store (Joseph Banks) in town would be a major plus.

Does anyone know what the "zoning restrictions" mentioned by the developer in the Roanoke Times article refer to? It was mentioned in the context of not being able to include residential housing as part of the project. It seems like apartments or condos over some of the retail spaces (like Kent Square) would bring a lot of vibrancy to the effort.
