Revitalization summary 7/27/07

As I had suggested to the Blacksburg town council in time for the May 29 double hearing, certain planning principles need to be followed and implementation steps taken post haste to save downtown life.

Various recent highly expensive superficial decorative efforts installed downtown cannot hide its moribund condition from thinking people. You're not very special when you're dead.

Indications are that these thinking people (all kinds) and their families have not been served well enough by recent town installations and omissions.

Many of us experience a feeling of fragmentation, and a lack of comfort, harmony and continuity downtown.

Two specific areas I target for correction are the current walk-bike-alley system and stopping the hemorrhaging of business life.

Finally I observe that the psychological and financial efforts of the current town government stressing "branding", competing with other places and marketing the town in glowing colors occur at the expense of permanent and student residents and seem detrimental to the downtown life.
