Supporters of Citizens First:
The Advisory Committee of Citizens First seeks you advice about the proposed change of the Blacksburg election cycle. The mayor has proposed changing the Town Charter to switch Council election dates from May, 2008, to the federal election date in November, 2008, and then to be held every two years thereafter. The rationale for the change is to increase the number of citizens who participate in local elections. Potential problems include: local issues getting lost in the national debate, elections becoming more partisan, and escalating campaign costs. Because the advantages and the disadvantages can be argued from several different perspectives, we want to hear from you.
The League of Women Voters has conducted a preliminary survey of other Virginia communities that have considered changing the election cycle. Some have gone one way, some another, some have stayed the same. So various precedents exist.
